What exactly is a bunk bed?

A Bunker Beds is a bed with a mattress base that is more than 30 inches above the floor. The mattress foundation is the base or support on which the mattress is placed. The ends of a bunk bed are the upright pieces at the head and foot of the bed to which the side rails are attached.

Bunker Beds must conform to the Bunker Beds standard as well as extra standards, such as the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA).

Adult Bunker Beds manufacturers and importers must attest in a General Certificate of Conformity (GCC) that the bunk beds conform with the standard following testing or a suitable testing procedure to assure compliance.

What does the bunk bed rule serve?
This rule is intended to reduce the danger of children dying or being injured as a result of being trapped between an upper bunk and a wall, in openings below the guardrails, or in gaps at the ends of bunk beds.
What is required by the bunk bed rule?
Guardrails:

A bunk bed must have at least two upper bunk guardrails, one on each side. Guardrails are not required for lower bunks with mattress foundations that are 30 inches or less from the floor.
The guardrail on the side of the bed closest to a wall or opposite a ladder must go from one end of the bed to the other. If the guardrail is not attached to a bed end, the distance between the guardrail’s end and the nearest end of the bunk bed cannot be more than 0.22 inches.
A guardrail on the side of the bed away from the wall does not have to run continuously from end to end of the bed, but it must be more than 15 inches between either end of the guardrail and the end of the bed closest to it.
Guardrails must be fastened to the bunk bed with fasteners that must be released before the rails may be removed, OR the rail or fastener must be designed to travel in two or more distinct directions, one after the other, in order to be released.
The guardrails’ tops must be at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress.
With no mattress on the upper bunk, any space between the guardrail’s bottom and the top of the mattress foundation must not allow the wedge block to pass easily. See the wedge block example below.

Ends of Bunk Beds:

There are no openings on either end of the top bunk above the mattress base that allow the wedge block to pass freely.
When the manufacturer’s recommended thickest mattress and mattress foundation is used, the top of each end of the upper bunk must extend at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress, and that 5-inch margin of safety must extend at least half the distance between the corner posts of each end.
No hole in the lower bunk’s headboard or footboard below the upper bunk’s mattress foundation and above the lower bunk’s mattress foundation should enable the wedge block to pass freely unless the opening also allows a hard 9-inch sphere to pass freely.
Any aperture in the lower bunk’s headboard or footboard below the mattress foundation of the upper bunk checked with the wedge block must also be evaluated for the danger of neck entrapment if the 9-inch sphere can freely pass through.

How do you check for entrapment dangers in a bunk bed?
Use the wedge block to probe areas between the guardrail and the upper bunk mattress base, as well as apertures in the upper and lower bunk ends, with no mattress on the bed. Place the wedge in the position where it is most likely to pass through the gap or opening, and then draw the wedge’s nose into the space or opening with the hook. Pull the wedge gradually and sustain a force of 33 foot-pounds for 1 minute for evaluating areas between the guardrail and the top mattress base.

If the wedge blocks smoothly slide through any aperture in the lower bunk end, try passing a 9-inch hard sphere through that opening. If the sphere slides freely through the aperture, check for neck entrapment.

The test is performed when the heaviest mattress and mattress base are in place.
